Choosing a dog or puppy

Are you thinking about getting a dog or puppy and wondering how to choose one? Well, I’ll share our story with you. My husband has always wanted a dog, however, when his job required us to move from Tampa (which I loved) to Fort Myers (which I was not too excited about), he thought a way to appease me would be to get a cat. We did and somehow this cat is in love with him! (I digress, but will share that story soon.)

choosing a dog

Anyway, after ten years, two children and many requests for a dog, I caved and said, “yes”. Next came the many decisions of going through a breeder (which the husband wanted) or to rescue (which I wanted). Another big decision is getting a puppy (which he wanted) or a dog that is a few years old (which I wanted). I have heard it is good to get a puppy if you rescue, so they are more likely to not have been abused (that may result in non-desirable behavior). I have also heard getting a dog that is around two is good because they are already housebroken (most likely) and should be out of the puppy chewing stage.

The next item to consider is what breed of dog. The husband went from wanting a Boxer to a Weimaraner to a Lab. So being the good compromiser I am, I started searching the local rescue for Labs. I found a wonderful rescue organization where the dogs live at a foster family’s home, which can ease the transition to your family and home. One of the obstacles we ran into with this organization is that they had events at numerous locations on Saturday’s, but if we found a puppy we wanted to see online, we never knew which location they would be on a given Saturday. We went a few times and couldn’t agree on any dog. Then, my daughter and I went and found a puppy we both loved. However, the husband and my son weren’t there, so I didn’t want to decide on a dog without them. Next, we found a puppy online and wanted to see him. My husband was able to get an associate at the organization’s number, so she told us where he would be on Saturday. However, right before we could see him, he got sick with parvo. He thankfully recovered, but no one got back to us after we applied to foster him.

However, after several failed attempts at adopting a puppy we wanted, we decided to search other options. One day, I found a bunch of lab mix puppies at another local rescue and we stopped on our way home from a weekend trip. My children had been on many dog searching trips, so they weren’t too excited. However,  we saw this cute little lab mix puppy, that was nice and calm (which I wanted).

After a few days of yucky bathroom times. We took him to the vet. They, in a round about way told me, he was so calm because he was sick. Thankfully, it was nothing serious and after several prescriptions, he is a healthy, energetic puppy!

As you may be able to tell from the picture, we compromised and got a rescue puppy! You may also like the post: life with a puppy – the first year (coming soon).

Mud run tips

Last month, a few friends and I participated in Chicago’s Mudderella. After running the race, we talked about some Mudderella (or any mud run) tips for next year. I’d love to share them with you, so you can enjoy them and hear your tips if you have done one!

  1. Wear tight clothing. Spandex Capri pants and a cotton top are a good choice. They help to cover your knees while you are crawling and climbing.
  2. Wear shoes (and clothes) you don’t mind getting dirty. This is pretty self explanatory.
  3. Wear bikini bathing suit bottoms under your capris or shorts. This way, you can shower and get into clean clothes quickly. They also will be less likely to be mud stained.
  4. Don’t wear glasses. You will be doing all kinds of obstacles and they will most likely fall off.
  5. Bring with you into the race (and check or leave with a spectator): a towel, pair of flip-flops and change of clothes. You may also want some soap. However, our shower was freezing, so I didn’t use any. The picture below is of me AFTER rinsing off.
  6. Your teamwork mindset. To me, this wasn’t really a traditional race because it wasn’t timed. Instead, people focused on helping eachother and finishing rather than making good time individually.

Have you done a mud race? If so, I would live to hear your tips in the comments below!

Much love,

Stephanie

Cancer Survivor’s Day

June 5th is Cancer Survivor’s Day! It is a day where the strength and stamina of many individuals are celebrated.

It should also be a time for awareness. A time to examine one’s lifestyle and a time to become aware of other situations.

Today, I am celebrating Heather, a 10 year  mesothelioma cancer survivor. You can read more about her story here.

A general overview of mesothelioma and how it’s caused can be found here. A page with various mesothelioma and asbestos facts can be found here. Additionally,  asbestos still has yet to be banned in the United States, and it’s still widely found in buildings built before the 1980’s…including homes and schools so information is still so important since avoiding exposure is the only way to prevent mesothelioma.  Become more educated on this topic and spread awareness!

Today (and everyday), let’s come together to love and help each other.

Who are you celebrating?

Marvelous Monday

Good morning! It’s Monday and a fresh start. Let’s take a look at our past week and set an intention of something you would like to improve on your journey to better health.

Some examples are:

  1. Increasing water intake: Did you drink half your weight in water?
  2. Sleep: Did you get between 6-8 hours of sleep?
  3. Get moving: Did you have some kind of movement for at least 20 minutes?
  4. Fresh air: Were you able to spend some time in nature?
  5. De-stress: Did you spend at least 5 minutes doing something fun? My favorites are dancing, yoga, meditation, and prayer.
  6. Eat more fruits and veggies: Did you reduce your processed food intake, especially sugar? You may enjoy this post.
  7. Be thankful: Are you focusing on the positive? It can do wonders for your mood.

What are your favorite Weekly intentions? For more tips and ideas, click  here.

Pick one focus and once you get that down pick another. Before you know it, you will be feeling much better!

Supercharge your coffee

This morning I supercharged my coffee and it was so quick, easy and delicious! Most mornings I drink a protein shake and a cup of coffee separately. However, we all know how crazy mornings can get. So one crazy morning, I decided to combine the two into one and was pleasantly surprised!

Supercharged coffee

1 cup coffee

2 scoops of protein powder

Blend and enjoy!

Enjoy your fast and vitamin filled breakfast on the run!

First Communion

My son made his First Communion this past weekend and I wanted to share some things we did to help make the day extra special.

First, my wonderful and way more crafty mother helped us make a Communion banner that would be carried into church and hung on the pew.

Next, we shopped for an outfit. I didn’t see many girls’ Communion dresses, but thankfully we just needed a suit this year. Kohl’s had everything we needed. We picked out a gray suit, lilac tie, belt, shoes and socks.

I thought it would be fun to have a white theme of sweets and decorations for after dinner.

The star of the table was a delicious cake made by our neighbor. I purchased a cross chocolate mold and we made white chocolate crosses. We also made white chocolate covered strawberries and pretzels.

I attempted to make my aunt’s delicious sugar cookies, but fell a little short.

My mom made pizzelles and my little man decided to turn them into a flower!

My mom made kolachi, which is a Slovak nut roll (sort of like a bread version of kiffles).

We also decorated the house in white and with First Communion decorations. However, can you tell we enjoy food? The whole post is almost all food! What did you do to help make a First Holy Communion even more special? I’d love to hear it in the comments below or post a picture on my Facebook page!

Blessings,

Stephanie
