Pumpkin Body Butter

I love pumpkin as you can probably tell from my many pumpkin posts (here, here and here). Trader Joe’s is one of my favorite places to visit during Fall. They seem to love all things pumpkin even more than I do!

I also love trying new things, so was excited to try this body butter. At first I didn’t think I liked the smell, but now I love it! It is a soft hint of pumpkin in a creamy lotion!

What is your favorite pumpkin item?

Happy Fall!

Overnight oats

Overnight oats are an easy, no cook way to have a healthy breakfast (or snack) in minutes.

Overnight oats

1/2 cup oats ( I use steel cut oats)

1/2 cup liquid (water or some type of milk)

1 Tbsp. Sweetener (honey, maple syrup, stevia, etc.)

Optional:

1tsp vanilla

Spices: cinnamon or nutmeg are my favorites

Fruit (even dried fruit)

Nuts

1 tsp chia seeds

1 tsp flax seeds or meal

Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.

In the morning, you can top it with fresh fruit and nuts. For added protein, mix protein powder in it. I like to put it in a mason jar and then it becomes a healthy, portable breakfast!

What are your favorite quick and healthy breakfasts?

Garmin Vivofit2 activity tracker

Recently I purchase the Garmin Vivofit2 activity tracker upon a recommendation of several people in a workout group.

I really like the tracker and all of its’ abilities. However, I’m not fond of the size and a few other challenges.

Pros:

  • It is waterproof. I went swimming and showered with it- no problemo!
  • It doubles as a watch and as an added bonus, you don’t have to hit it or flip your wrist to turn it on. It always indicates the time.
  • You don’t have to charge it. The manual says the batteries need replaced in about a year.
  • Inexpensive price point!
  • Garmin app automatically carries over to my fitness pal and is very user friendly.

Cons:

  • It is really hard to push the button to change the display and sync it. I mean, VERY hard. I’m not sure if I got a lemon, but I had to pop the black piece out of the watch to push the button. Even then, I still had a mark on my thumb from how hard I had to push it.
  • It is longer than my wrist, which was a little awkward looking.
  • The black piece popped out of the band a little too easily. Maybe it was because I had to pop it out a lot.
  • It didn’t manually sync as I was told it would. Mine never manually synced and I wore it non-stop for over a month.
  • It randomly didn’t record 3 days of data. Of course, it was when I ran a 5k (more about that here).
  • Their customer service person wasn’t too concerned with my cons listed above.

I like this watch, but will keep looking.

Tips for better sleep

Sleep. We all need it, but sometimes we don’t get enough. Therefore, Casper (you can read about their mattresses here) and  I are very excited to share some tips for better sleep.

1. Relax. Do something each day to relax and de-stress. Some ideas are: yoga, meditation, praying, deep breathing and stretching.

2. Create a nighttime routine. Each night, doing the same actions will tell your body it is time for resting. For example, you could take a shower, do several sun salutations, read and go to bed.

It also helps to go to bed and get up the same times each day, even on the weekend.

3. Elliminate the noise. Using a fan, sleep machine or ear plugs can help minimize noise and create a more restful environment.

4. Shut down. Minimizing screen time an hour before bed and writing down a to-do list can help quiet your mind.

5.  Take this. Drinking warm milk or taking gentle sleep complex can also help bring on sleep.

Life with a puppy

Are you thinking about getting a puppy? If so, you may want to read our puppy story. This is our story of life with a puppy for the first year. After getting our rescue “lab”, I had no idea what I was doing. I have never had a dog before or even been around a puppy for more than a few minutes. I also had no idea how much our lives would change! This ordeal reminds me a little of  when I had children!

Life with a puppy

Puppies are similar to children in that they don’t sleep through the night, so waking up several times though out the night was an adjustment. I forgot how difficult it was to function without uninterrupted sleep for multiple consecutive nights! Having a puppy is also similar to have a new baby in that you question things. How much am I supposed to feed him? What kind of food is the best for him? How often is he supposed to go potty? Is that what it is supposed to look like? All of these questions brought me back to the days when my children were infants. So, I did what most people do and scoured the internet and books!

Additionally, I always see people around the neighborhood walk so nicely with their dogs. I figured it just came naturally. Nope! Puppies need to practice walking with you. When we got our puppy at three months, there really was no walking on the leash. It was more like he would dart back and forth and almost choke himself on the leash. Even when we purchased a harness for his chest, he still would gag and choke. So, for the third month of his life, we just let him run around the back yard. Now that we are on month five, we can actually down the street for a short period of time.

puppy nipping

Then, there is nipping. Well, I call it “biting”, but dog lovers call it “nipping”. When we first brought him home, we didn’t realize he was sick. He just slept a lot. Then, once he started to feel better, I found out what nipping really was. Puppies teeth are like knives – well at least my puppy’s teeth are! Now that he is healthy and big, my arms and legs are all scratched up! I have learned to spray bitter apples on my arms if he is in a biting mood and he will stop. I also try to have a toy by me to give to him, when my arm looks like a chew toy. The last tip is to teach your puppy how to sit early. I was able to do this before we started our puppy lessons with lots and lots of treats. Now, even if he is in a biting mood, I can get him to stop and sit with a treat.  Lucky for us, it seems he only gets in his nipping moods first thing in the morning and right when we are done with work and pick the kids up from school.

puppy

Then there is growling, pouncing and nipping at other dogs. Dog lovers are always saying to me, “he’s just a puppy!” What does that even mean?!?! Are they just trying to be nice, but really thinking my dog is crazy? Friends and neighbors, who have seen our pup say that he is a calm puppy. Seriously? If this is a calm puppy, I think this will be our last puppy. I’ll rescue an older dog next time!

Last item worth mentioning is the fur! Wow! Let’s just say, if you only sweep or vacuum once a week, you will be doing it more often.

But, when he wags his tail and is so happy to see you, it does make you feel pretty good. Hopefully, I’ll become more of a dog person and form a great bond with Jax, like all of the other dog loving posts I see everywhere!

Do you have a dog? What is your advice to new puppy owners?

Our trip to Las Vegas

We took a trip to Las Vegas and had the opportunity to go with some friends and family who are foodies and Vegas regulars! So, we got to experience some great places.

Friday, we got in about 9am Vegas time and checked into the Bellagio. After settling into our rooms, we had lunch at Olives in the Bellagio. It was nice to look at the fountains and strip while eating lunch. The fig and prosciutto flat bread was amazing (well, the figs and flatbread was, I removed the meat).

After exploring, we drove to a delicious Italian restaurant, Nora’s Cuisine. We reserved the private back room, which comes with an assortment of appetizers. Everything was delicious and I could have made a meal out of the salad!

Then we went to the chandler bar and had a low-key evening with some nice people watching.

Aria

Saturday, we went to Bardot Brasserie, which is a delicious French restaurant in the Aria. My yogurt and fruit plate was wonderful!

After doing a walking tour of the strip, we took a car to the famous Vegas sign and were off to dinner at Herbs and Rye, which is a local steak place. They have half price steaks and some other items for happy hour!

Then, we drove on a quick tour of downtown Vegas.

Sunday, was a pool day. We got a cabana and just relaxed. It was wonderful!

After relaxing all day, we finished our walking tour of Vegas. Then, we went to Yard bird for some southern cuisine.

On Monday, we took an early flight home.

Have you been to Vegas? I’d love to hear what your think in the comments!

If you enjoyed this post or know someone going to Vegas, please share it! Also, you may be interested in our trip to Napa, Central Valley, Disney, Epcot or Italy (c0ming soon).

Two Brother’s Brewery restaurant review

Recently, we went to Two Brother’s Brewery with my husband’s parents. I was pleasantly surprised when their menu indicated they try to use local farms and organic ingredients.

We tried several of the beers they had that day and they were very good. Two of ordered the veggie wraps; two ordered the Cubans and my little one ordered the Mac and cheese.

The wrap was healthy and good, but not too flavorful. They had fries like fries from a fair, which everyone enjoyed. I am not much of a meat eater and lived near Miami, so wasn’t too impressed by the Cuban. Their Mac and cheese was not from a box and had a creamy flavor.

Overall, we enjoyed Two Brother’s brewery and restaurant and will be back again. Have you been to Two Brother’s? If so, did you like it?

Start exercising

Do you want to start exercising? I do. So many times I have started, stuck with it for a while and then stopped. I’m getting tired of this routine and the excuses that accompany it. Then one day, it just clicked. I realized a short opportunity to exercise each day and vowed to stick with it.

I have a dog that needs walked (you can read more about him here), which is a great excuse to exercise. However, I also have two younger children with a husband that has a very busy schedule. One day a light bulb went off and I realized the 20 minute window when he comes home from working out and gets ready before leaving for work is my 20 minute window where I can get in a quick jog and walk the dog! Double-win!

As I was walking, I felt compelled to share this realization on the blog to hopefully help someone else. I know life is busy, but finding even twenty minutes to exercise can really help your body and mind. Look at your schedule and find time to squeeze in a twenty minute walk. If it is too hot or cold or you have children, squeeze in a quick DVD or youtube video. I love yoga with Adriene on youtube.

Do you have any exercise habits you would like to share? What are your favorite workout videos? We’d love to hear them in the comments below.
